This past weekend I attended a trade show of sorts, where there were lots of vendors from similar industries selling their products and services to the general public. I have on occasion assisted clients who participate in these shows when they find themselves short staffed for the event.
While I was at the event, there was time before opening each day and I would walk around a speak with other vendors, ask them how the show was, and just general chit-chatting while in the hospitality room to at their booths. There was this one vendor that I vaguely remember from other shows, and he was known for his success in the industry, even when others may see a dip, such as a recession. I was chatting one morning and I asked him, "Why do you think you are successful at times when others in this business may not be?" He answer ...
"I work to stay as relevant as Tori Spelling even when I am living in Kardashian world."
First off, let's applaud this possibly 60/70 year-old man for staying up to date on today's (and yesterday's) celebrities, though I don't think the Kardashians are not hard to miss, even when you are not searching.
Secondly, the more I thought about it, the more I realized he had a solid method for success, even if he had a colorful way of saying "always work like your next meals depends on it."
Its so easy to get caught up in success and let your guard drop, take an "easy day". Why try new trends or look for
new techniques when you are already successful. Just because what you are doing right now is working, tomorrow, next week, or next month you could find that it isn't working and you're scrambling to find new techniques.
Businesses have ups and downs just like our personal lives, but knowing that and being able to adjust and adapt can be the difference between your business seeing small dips versus large craters.
When it comes to social media and marketing it is important to always be looking at what the new tips and trends are and how you can implement them into your marketing plan.
Newsletters, social media pages with active posts and interactions, YouTube Channels and vlogs/blogs are just some of the trends that are keeping businesses at the forefront of their community's mind and helping grow their customer base and client list. But event these are broad concepts and are continually changing.
If you want to stay at the top of your game when it comes to your business, you always have to be working as hard as you did that first day you opened your doors, if not harder. Always be looking for the next tip, tool, trend and technique to help you reach your goal and succeed. Just like a restaurants looks for the next new dish, a boutique looks for the next trending look or an athlete looks for the newest strength building exercise, you can't assume that the tools you use now will be as advantageous after the next trend emerges.
If you look at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and all the other social media sites, you will see that there are constant updates that fix bugs, add new elements and continue to evolve. So should you when it comes to your business marketing.
Look at the evolution of Kim Kardashian-West. First she was a personal shopper for celebrities, then after a 4-episode appearance on a TV show, she and her sisters launched DASH, a luxury clothing store. Shortly after a sex-tape was leaked gaining some unplanned attention and she was soon dating rising football star, Reggie Bush.
Within months, her family has a reality show, she was dating other high profile athletes which led to a short-loved marriage. As her fame and fortune rise, she couldn't be slowed as she launches a social media empire with herself as the subject. She continued to build herself as a brand with public appearances, high profiled relationships and another marriage. Her social media presence was in so much demand, she released a book of images of herself. She has used her status to launch a television production company, had product endorsements and even launched a clothing line, cosmetic line and lifestyle app.
Despite the divide on public opinion of Kardashian-West we can learn from her and her family on a business level. Their continued quest for success has led to almost every member of the family being a brand as well as a successful brand as a family. They work together and compete with each other to build their empires. Despite their current success they are always looking for the next opportunity. This is certainly a tool all businesses can use to build their brand.
When you are always looking for the next opportunity and refuse to settle, you soon learn that you can always do more and you are only limited by your imagination. Where will your imagination take you?
